Inspiration
Our inspiration came from games like Vampire Survivor and Frostpunk where you balance light and darkness mechanics. We wanted to create a fast-paced survival game built around this concept.
What it does
Blaze Blizzard is a top-down survival game where you control a fireball in a freezing tundra environment. You light campfires to stay warm, melt ice to find the resources, and avoid wind gusts that can extinguish your flame. Strange creatures emerge at night - you have to balance exploring and scavenging versus finding shelter in harsh blizzards.
How we built it
We used Godot Engine for rapid 2D prototyping. The dynamic lighting and physics-based fireball controller were custom-built systems we focused engineering efforts on. UIs were implemented in the Godot editor. We both drew and using the free assets from Internet.
Challenges we ran into
The dynamic lighting syncing with fireball movement and world interactions proved challenging from a performance perspective. We overcame this by optimizing illumination ranges and bake static lighting where possible.
What we learned
Experimenting in Godot taught us best practices related to performance optimizations and gameplay prototyping.
What's next for Blaze Blizzard
More environments like volcanic areas. Enhanced fireball abilities via skill trees. And more mobs
