Inspiration
We went to a start up expo and realized that people were still wasting money on traditional paper business cards. Not only does the person who gets the cards made waste money, but the person he/she gives it to usually loses the card in a day or two (on average). Somewhere down the line when the business card might actually be useful, its long gone.
What it does
Essentially users can register and upload their card once, then share it with anyone they want via a unique ID. The person who receives the card wont lose it and also no more money will be wasted on making hundreds of cards every year. Win-Win for both parties, not to mention the minimization of pollution and saving on natural resources.
How I built it
Me and my team build it for IOS and Android, hence making it cross-platform. This application uses a backend database as well as a cloud storage facility so after the user initially uploads their card they no longer need to keep the picture on their phone as wasted space. Every card the user gets will also be saved in the cloud.
Challenges I ran into
Image compression is extremely hard to do without losing quality and/or turning the image into a thumbnail instead. We were able to send and receive full pictures which did not compromise quality.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We made the IOS AND Android version along with the whole back-end (DB and Cloud), with a relatively decent GUI within 9 hours.
What I learned
How to deal with gradle problems in Android and solving the image compression problem mentioned above.
What's next for bitCard
Version 2 will include a whole new set of features for multiple card upload per user and a smoother interface.
