Inspiration
Many students are too busy balancing classes, assignments, part-time jobs, and personal responsibilities to constantly check multiple platforms for campus updates. At the University of Manitoba, events are often promoted across scattered sources such as Instagram pages, posters, email newsletters, and word of mouth. Because of this, students frequently miss opportunities, so BEVENTS was created to solve this simple but significant problem: students often don’t know what’s happening around campus.
What it does
BEVENTS centralizes everything into one easy-to-use platform, allowing students to discover events, join clubs, and stay connected. It increases engagement, strengthens community, and ensures no opportunity goes unnoticed.
How we built it
We’re using JavaScript, HTML, and web scraping to build a platform that fetches events from the University of Manitoba website, Instagram, and other club websites, then combines everything into one place for students to easily find campus events, so we as students don't miss them.
Challenges we ran into
GitHub version control manages branches, merges, and keeps everyone’s work in sync as a team. Scraping from different platforms, each site (like Instagram, university pages, and club websites) has different layouts and structures, which made it challenging to collect data consistently and also plan how future database integration would work
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As second-year Computer Science students, we built and completed this project within 24 hours, creating a centralized event hub specifically for University of Manitoba students with a clean, modern interface that makes campus events easy to find and browse.
What we learned
We learned new technology and how to use GitHub and version control properly
What's next for Bisons Event Hub
We will scale it up so that it is accessible for everyone
