Inspiration
Most biologists dislike maths and statistics (yeah we do). However, maths is unavoidable, and the advanced level of maths and its applications (such as machine learning), are frequently applied to analyze complex biological datasets. Machine learning is mostly applied to 6 biological domains, including genomics, proteomics, microarrays, systems biology, evolution, and text mining.
Inspired by the book Statistics for Terrified Biologists, we would like to build a no-code bioinformatics platform for biologists to analyze their data.
What it does
Web app
Users can login/ register
Users choose the type of analysis
Users can upload a dataset
Users can clean the dataset
Users select statistics test and parameters
Users can view results and customize the layout for export
Machine learning models
- Predict gene function based on the DNA coding sequence
How we built it
Web app concept using Figma
Machine learning models using Python
Web app using HTML, CSS, Flask
Challenges we ran into
Our initial plan was to link the machine learning models to a web app. However, none of us are familiar with web development, and we spent a lot of time working on the integration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have built a working prototype!
What we learned
We learnt a lot about bioinformatics, machine learning and web development
What's next for Biostica
Genomic analysis
- Analysis of RNA-seq/ ChIP-seq data
Filter data
- Options for users to clean data via the platform
