Inspiration
As climate change is becoming an increasingly big issue, educating others about its prominence has become necessary. This urgency is what inspired us to make "Trash Bash".
What it does
Trash Bash teaches people how and what to recycle and compost while also communicating its importance. Trash Bash has 5 sections: our mission with Trash Bash, learning, impact, statistics, and practice which items to recycle/compost/trash.
How we built it
We built Trash Bash using Replit and Scratch. We used HTML, CSS, JavaScript to code the website and Scratch to create the game.
Challenges we ran into
When building both the website and the game, we ran into a lot of challenges with details, such as displaying images and text, making a navigation bar, and learning/using the syntax. Specifically, we did a lot of research on the information and creating the game. Originally, when designing the game, we worked using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. However, after running into difficulties, mainly integrating the game with our website, we discovered Scratch, which allowed us to fulfill our goal of creating an interactive and educational game. Additionally, on Scratch, the blocks were difficult to understand because they were not as customizable as coding, so we learned to use our problem solving skills to work around and discover solutions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were very proud when we found out how to make a navigation bar and creating and coding the game. Learning to integrate the navigation bar into each page was specifically difficult because every part of the page made a big difference on whether the code would work or not. Making the game was especially difficult because the blocks on Scratch did not allow much customization or have many libraries to use. However, when we learned how to make it more customizable, we were also very excited and proud.
What we learned
Not only did we learn how to collaborate with each other and use our resources to push us closer to our goal, but also in the research phase, we gained a deeper understanding of the crucial role responsible waste management plays in environmental health. The impact of recycling and composting resonated with us, and we are driven to translate that knowledge into engaging gameplay. This helped us understand the impact we could make by educating individuals about trash, recycling, and composting.
What's next for Trash Bash
In the future, we hope to develop more parts of our website and game. Our first step for the game is to transfer it from Scratch to actual code. After this, we will be able to make connect users together and possibly have them compete against each other. Additionally, in the same direction as Trash Bash, we also hope to create more hacks to educate people and communities about the importance of sustainability.
