Inspiration

The inspiration behind our project, BethereAI, stemmed from witnessing the growing communication gap between working adults and the elderly due to working adults' busy working life. Additionally, most elderly are not tech-savy and this made it harder for them contact their loved ones. Thus, there is an immense importance for maintaining strong emotional connections across generations and we wanted to leverage AI to bridge that time, physical, or tech-literacy barriers. Therefore, we created BeThereAI to enhance the physical and emotional communication between the elderly and their loved ones, even when physical proximity was challenging.

What it does

Throughout the development of BethereAI, we learned about the unique communication needs of the elderly and the challenges faced by working adults in maintaining regular contact. We delved into the intricacies of deepfake technology, exploring its potential benefits and ethical considerations. We also gained insights into the complexities of language translation and the significance of personalized experiences in fostering meaningful connections.

Additionally, BeThereAI comes with a device for elderly - BTAssist, which allow elderly to easily communicate with the loved ones due to it's simple interface.

How we built it

We built BethereAI by harnessing the power of HumeAI, a sophisticated artificial intelligence platform based on recognizing human emotions. Leveraging HumeAI's capabilities, we integrated advanced text-to-voice and voice-to-text translation algorithms to facilitate seamless communication between working adults and the elderly. We also utilized deep-fake technology to replicate the loved ones so that the elderly can see the replica speaking to them instead of just text.

We designed a tabletop assistive device named BTAssist, with a user-centered design, ensuring the user interface was intuitive, accessible, and simple for the elderly.

Challenges we ran into

Building BeThereAI presented several challenges. One significant challenge was navigating the ethical considerations associated with deepfake technology. We invested considerable effort in ensuring transparency, consent, and privacy protection to maintain trust and respect individual rights.

Another challenge was optimizing the accuracy and naturalness of voice-to-text and text-to-voice conversions. We tackled this challenge by refining and fine-tuning the underlying AI models, leveraging large datasets, and conducting rigorous testing to ensure the highest quality translations and voice renderings.

Additionally, we faced technical hurdles related to the integration of different components and ensuring seamless interoperability across various platforms and devices. Through meticulous development, deep research, and design interations, we overcame these challenges to create a robust and reliable solution.

What we learned

During the development of BethereAI, we have gained valuable insights and knowledge. Here are some key learnings:

  1. Ethical Considerations: We have deepened our understanding of the ethical implications surrounding deepfake technology. By actively addressing concerns related to privacy, consent, and transparency, we have established a foundation for responsible use of AI in communication.

  2. Technical Expertise: Developing BethereAI has sharpened our technical skills in areas such as natural language processing, speech synthesis, and translation algorithms. We have honed our abilities to optimize accuracy, voice naturalness, and system performance to ensure a high-quality user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Throughout the development of BethereAI, we have achieved several notable accomplishments. These include:

  • Successful Integration: We have seamlessly integrated text-to-voice and voice-to-text translation functionalities into the BethereAI platform. Users can effortlessly convert text messages to personalized voice messages and vice versa, enhancing the communication experience for both working adults and the elderly.

  • Ethical Approach: We have prioritized ethics and privacy throughout the project. By implementing strict consent protocols, privacy measures, and transparent user interfaces, we ensure that user trust is maintained and that deepfake technology is used responsibly. Furthermore, the facial and voice data collected will be through the device and stored locally there with encryption.

  • User-Centric Design: Our user-centered design approach has allowed us to create an intuitive and accessible platform that caters to the unique needs and preferences of both working adults and the elderly. We are proud of our efforts to provide a user-friendly experience that enhances connectivity and fosters emotional connections.
