EMERGING MOSQUITOS Beginner Track

About

We integrated data from GLOBE Observer to display mosquito risk. Then, we analyzed mosquito sightings in Florida to evaluate how breeding risk profiles differ between artificial and natural standing water sources.

What we built

We built a map that models mosquito habitat throughout Florida and displays what type of water source they are living in.

Results

According to our data, mosquitoes of Florida tend to be concentrated in artificial water containers. This displays how mosquito breeding grounds are largely preventable because it is mostly artificial water containers, which are much easier to eliminate than natural ponds or puddles.

Why this matters

Using our results, we can help guide Florida to a path which mosquitos are prevented from mass breeding which can help thousands of people per year who are victims of mosquito borne diseases. With this data, we found that mosquitoes were most prevalent in artificial water containers. In order to prevent the spread of vector-born disease, it would be beneficial to take action that would decrease the amount of artificial water containers that can be accessed by mosquitoes. This could be changed through different waste disposal measures.
