Inspiration
Often it takes a group effort to achieve the impossible... or the bee-possible. This typing game was inspired by Hacklahoma's theme of unity and togetherness, as well as a love of bees. This group of bee friends will have to work together to find their way back to their home after a sudden storm!
What it does
Bees & Beehives, a name inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, tells the tale of 6 bees that were suddenly blown away from their home. Lost and, at first, alone, these bees must reunite and find their path back to their hive. By practicing your typing skills, you can guide these bees on their quest and progress through a series of levels before, hopefully, getting to their destination!
Each stage along the path home features a different set of bee facts that have to be reproduced accurately to continue forwards. A score of 70% accuracy will allow you and the bees to continue. Additionally, you can strive to increase your typing speed while maintaining that goal.
How it was built
Bees & Beehives was built using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and jQuery. All of the graphics and GIFs were made using Clip Studio Paint.
Challenges
The main challenge that I faced was with incorporating the Javascript with the HTML. This especially proved to be a challenge with the different page layouts and getting things to stay where they should.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
While I have worked with basic website frontend before, this was my first time scripting things. As such, I was especially proud to be able to create a typing game. Typing speed tests are a nice way to de-stress so I am glad to have my own that I can use and share with others!
What's next for Bees & Beehives
Progress comes with time and practice and typing is no different than that. By adding a way to keep track of progress and map improvements over time, this could provide the player feedback. And positive feedback is a good way to bee positive!
