Inspiration:We realized that mental health is quite a difficult concept for many kids to understand, with the not so great parts of life often being hidden from them they are often left confused about how they are feeling. We wanted to help that, the Bee Well app allows for children to track their own mental health, creating a base for good habits as they age. Mental health in children is often overlooked and is not easily identifiable, Bee Well provides a chance for all children to track their mental health and well being in a way that is fun and interactive. There are many warning signs of mental illness to look for in children and the Bee Well app allows for many of the warning signs to be tracked and inputted into a calendar to track one’s well being long term.

What it does: The Bee Well site is a mental health tracking program that allows for children to track their own mental well being. With parents often being the one to track the health of their kids, Bee Well allows children to take on the initiative to do that instead. The website asks the user a variety of questions that pertain to their mental health/well being, such as “How much water have you drank today” or “How are you feeling today”. Over a period of time children can see a trend start to form, they may not feel so well on some days more than others, or there may be a time where they did not feel so well for a long period of time. After seeing this, they can think of what they can do on those days or periods of time to improve their well being, whether it be an extra snack or even a visit to the park, the site provides a variety of options.

How we built it: We used HTML to build the base of the website. This includes the title, name of the webpage. images and the quiz questions and buttons themselves. We used CSS to build out the stylistic element like background color, text color, text font and text alignment.

Challenges we ran into: As we are first-time hackathon participants we ran into a variety of challenges that we needed to overcome. The first major challenge we encountered was only having a single team member who knows how to code in Javascript, HTML and CSS. We needed to delegate tasks and expand our knowledge of these languages in order to contribute to our team's overall success. Another challenge we encountered was not knowing how to use Javascript with HTML to display the survey points.

Accomplishments that we're proud of a: As this was a new program, we are proud to say we were able to create a working, interactive survey within the time given. Learning what we could have of HTML and CSS within a day’s time proved to be a huge accomplishment on our part.

What we learned: : This project was a huge learning process for everyone, from learning HTML, CSS and Javascript to learning how to use Qoom there was many things for us to learn during this experience.

What's next for Bee Well: Next we plan to add a variety of more elements to the app, adding more question will allow to track one’s mental well-being better. We plan to integrate more ways that can add a little joy to one’s day (e.g songs to listen to, stories to read, activities to do). We also plan to add a journaling component, allowing children to give more specifics on how they are feeling that way.
