Inspiration

My partner and I were having a bad day and we were going through a lot as we arrived late to the hackathon. My friend and I just wanted to have fun since it was our very first hackathon and we were inspired to win the Frying Pan category when we saw it at the opening ceremony. We decided to make a fun app that would cheer us up and remind us why we love coding!

What it does

Every day, champions from around the world come from far and wide to compete in the world-renowned BEAST BATTLES. Though ferocious, these fighters cannot win alone. They need your help to find the strength to overpower their opponents. Click one of today's fighters and click their "strengthen" button to lend them your strength. Fights conclude every 30 minutes; whoever is the strongest will win! Our app is similar to Cookie Clicker, but the clicks are synced across all devices and update in real time. The clicks also reset every 30 mins when a "winner" is chosen.

How we built it

We built the frontend using React with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. We used Firebase for the backend.

Challenges we ran into

It took a while for us to figure out how to set up a backend which ended up being most of our troubles. We spent maybe 6 hours trying to solve this problem before discovering Firebase, which ended up being very simple to use.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We learned a lot about React, JavaScript, and Firebase. We also pushed through our sleepiness and we are also proud because we didn't take the project super seriously and as a result had a lot of fun at this hackathon!

What we learned

We learned a lot about React and JavaScript which we weren't familiar with. We also used Firebase and backend work for the first time.

What's next for Beast Battles

Our app is nowhere near finished but we want to finish it later today and hopefully deploy it soon!
