Inspiration
As lovers of food, especially free food, we were inspired to create this interactive map to make the process of scavenging for freebies on your birthday more accessible.
What it does
With geolocation, our project locates the user and displays markers on a map at restaurants or stores that have birthday specials, which open up to show their addresses and gifts.
How we built it
We started with a HTML template in which we added a Google Maps API map. We then created a MongoDB database to house the collection of stores and their respective sign up links, gifts, and locations. Then it was just a matter of connecting the database and the front-end so we could display all the information on the map.
Challenges we ran into
We experienced challenges in installing MongoDB and in retrieving accurate coordinate points.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Through late nights and never-ending zoom calls, our team was able to persevere and produce a working prototype.
What we learned
Through building the project, we were able to learn new skills while honing in on our old ones.
What's next for BDAYFREEDAY
Down the line, we intend to expand past Santa Barbara County. We could also implement a "shopping cart" feature where users could essentially choose the places they want to visit and the program would generate the most efficient route.
