Tap Tap Revenge for iOS and classic Space Invaders
Also I made a few funky music tracks a while back and wanted to make a game using them. A tap style rhythm game seemed to make the most sense. Just tap the Invaders to the Beat thus the name, Bass Invaders.
What it does
Invaders spawn to the music. Tap as they cross the targets. Taps will be synced to the current music track. Also there is a progression through the 5 levels/tracks. You have to complete 1 to unlock the next. Lastly there is a high score leaderboard for each level so you can challenge your friends everyday as the LeaderBoard refresh daily. Though I've considered making the LB update every week or month... for now they update daily.
How I built it
Using typescript in the Horizon Editor and some help from the Gen AI for a few elements like the really nice looking space background/skybox, the sound effects, and some textures in the world. Gen AI was also helpful in some cases for scripting.
Challenges I ran into
Hooking up leaderboards was a challenge until I realized they don't work in the editor. Then also getting the taps to be in time with the music. I had to sort out some very weird local vs server ownership stuff to get that gameplay to work well. Last is having confidence in my direction. But thanks to the feedback team's positive thoughts I got the confidence to continue. They also provided some great suggestions for finishing touches which was helpful too.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm happy with the final gameplay and how it feels! Also it was nice to integrate my music, and I think it fits this theme pretty well too. Also, I got in all the features I hoped including 5 unlockable playable tracks and leaderboards.
What I learned
Trying to setup everything as a world with an avatar is quite different than typical mobile dev. But it was interesting and I learned alot.
Also typescript is so weird LOL. It works well enough, but sometimes the "undefined" class or running on server vs local (when you specified local) can be hard to track down with console.log. But, I've gotten better sorting out those issues.
What's next for Bass Invaders
My goal is to add more tracks and possibly more play modes to enable Horizion friend's many rhythmic gameplay types and songs to play through for the top scores.
