Inspiration
The desire to use our purchasing power responsibly is quite common, but it’s so hard to know which brands we can trust, and objective comparisons are also quite tricky.
What it does
Our app makes it really easy to pull up a company’s actual, objective viewpoint and work towards sustainability and presents it in an easy to understand format!
How we built it
Designers: Performed market analyses, built wireframes, and established a visual identity through Figma to design and produce a prototype. Collaborated closely with the developer to ensure a seamless experience in the finalized mobile app.
Devs: Used Bravo to turn our Figma prototype into a functional app, including the working QR code/barcode scanner and functional search bar. Was able to acquire a database from World Benchmarking Alliance’s Food and Agriculture Benchmark. After cleaning and formatting the dataset we spliced another dataset to acquire the companies’ SDGs and logos and then integrated the data directly into the app using an API.
Challenges we ran into
As our team adopted Bravo, an unfamiliar mobile app development software, we faced a few obstacles with implementing the designs and pulling the APIs. Specifically, the documentation for integrating databases was outdated, which posed a number of issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to put together our app with a team of two! Which is a pretty big accomplishment.
What's next for Basket Buddy
With more time, we would aim to focus on increasing the number of companies researched, as well as improving and testing our app. We would also partner to promote local and sustainable brands, to provide more opportunities for people to shop sustainably.
