Inspiration

I came across the theme of the hackathon which is sustainability. Immediately, I thought of ways that we are affecting the planet becoming the cause of global warming and climate change. Which is why I looked up on the internet for some efficient ways that could help us reduce our carbon footprints as an individual. Looking at the statistics of CO2 emissions of many countries, I realized that the smallest things bring the biggest changes in the nature.

TBA

What it does

It brings out the thought of estimating carbon footprints of an individual on a yearly basis. It is more like a self-reflection test that we perform within our mind further impacting the way we use natural resources that emit greenhouse gases. It is a static website.

How we built it

We collected information from valid sources to create a set of questions on carbon footprints. Putting those questions in a form, we tried to calculate an estimate of carbon footprint. We have created a HTML form using elements like radiobuttons, checkboxes and labels to draw answers from the user. We have created a navigation bar on the webpage to navigate to different sections of the page.

Challenges we ran into

We could not add the database to the website. We were looking to create a quiz-like functionality for the questions in the website but couldn't figure out the logic of it in javascript.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are happy that we could complete the projects within few hours despite the roadblocks.

What we learned

We learnt what is carbon footprint and how it affects the world. We tried exploring more functionalities of javascript so as to implement it in the project but it didn't work.

What's next for BackyardHacks - TBA

  • Accurately estimate the carbon footprint
  • Add a backend/database
