Space, the final frontier. That unknown and vast expanse has piqued the curiosity of many astronomers for centuries and motivated current generations to the same extent. We wanted to provide a useful tool to both the greater scientific community and the amateur astronomers they all started as.
AstroLog gives amateur astronomers and astrophotographers the ability to turn their pictures into meaningful scientific observations. Anyone can create an AstroLog account and have their images analyzed and logged! Once you upload a photo of the starry night, AstroLog returns your image, labeled with what stellar objects you've photographed, along with the time, location, and date to really make that observation real science! It even returns a labeled catalogue image, showing you exactly which star is which! You can also view all of the logs you've made over time, revisit your own and experience the personal exploration of the cosmos!
The application has 3 layers: The database layer, API layer, and Frontend. The database layer handles the storing of the logs and handles user authentication. The API handles database communications and the processing with data.py. The frontend handles the page-specific content and site navigation.
At first, AstroLog was going to be a mobile app, taking advantage of the speed and convenience that only a cell phone can provide! As it turns out, developing a mobile app in 24 hours for the first time is rather difficult. So, we had to pivot. While a website doesn't allow for the sleek experience we were seeking, it was something we could reasonably do given the time constraints.
Although we weren't able to build that mobile app, we are extremely proud of what we were able to do in only 24 hours. We were able to build a full-stack web app that can load, analyze and store astrological images, facilitate access to account-specific information and manage multiple databases. We had to learn about the mobile development process, how to make backend schematics and computer vision algorithms work.
We hope to continue building AstroLog to include all of the features we planned on adding, such as a forum system, secure user database and global sharing of logged images to create one of the most useful datasets for modern astronomy!
