Inspiration
We saw there was a big need for an ASL-focused flashcard system. Given that ASL is a very visual language, most traditional flashcard programs do not support it will. We hope that our project can lower the barrier to learning ASL and make improve accessibility for the hearing impaired.
What it does
ASLearn is a website that aims to teach the alphabet letters of American Sign Language (ASL) through flashcards.
How we built it
We built ASLearn through blood (okay, maybe not blood), sweat, and tears. Also, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
We had many challenges (too many to count!). The most notable ones were writing the logic for our flashcard system with JavaScript and aligning all of our components in CSS.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're especially proud of the flashcard system we built!
What we learned
Since this was all of our first hackathons, we gained a lot of hands-on experience using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Moreover, we learned how to effectively work together as part of a software development team to make a project we're proud of.
What's next for ASLearn
In the future, we would like to implement flashcards for more words in ASL as well as a habit tracker system so our users can see how many days in a row they've practiced ASL.
