Inspiration
Many people want to learn and practice ASL in a way that is free, simple, and convenient. ASL Fingerspelling Learner was designed to bring these resources to an audience in a simple, versatile, and easy format.
What it does
ASL Fingerspelling Learner provides a simple platform for users to practice their ASL Fingerspelling. We provide an aesthetic and intuitive UI to promote the practice of ASL, which may not be readily accessible for all.
We have two websites. Our first prototyping website is a clean proof-of-concept that tests ASL fingerspelling for letters, words, and sentences. Our second website adds a leaderboard and account features.
How we built it
Our initial prototype was done through pure HTML/CSS/JS. We designed this first website on Figma. We then made another website with a leaderboard and account login system with Svelte and SQLite.
Challenges we ran into
This was our first time using the Svelte and SQLite, so we faced issues learning and applying them. Other than that we spent hours debugging miscellaneous issues and bugs, as is the typical coding experience.
What's next for ASL Fingerspelling Learner
We want the computer to give exercises according to the handsigns that the user is known to struggle with most. We also want to incorporate AI so that the computer can give more tailored problems and exercises to the user. We also want to use AI so that it can make real-time videos of a hand doing the motions of all the handsigns, which is something that's never been done before.
