The quick guide to how to pronounce ASCLEPS: AY-skleps

Inspiration 💡
for ASCLEPS
Our main idea was to address the struggle with healthcare in North Carolina. After searching around, we realized the one thing every person we interviewed said was that they had no idea how much a trip to the doctor was going to cost. This inspired us to develop an app that can deal with the issues revolving around a lack of hindsight regarding medical fees.
What 🤔
ASCLEPS does
ASCLEPS takes symptoms input by the user and returns a health diagnosis based on the symptoms. We also included nearby healthcare facilities, how much it would cost to go there, and other resources for people to use.
How we built 👷♀️👷♀️👷♀️👷♂️
ASCLEPS
Firstly, we made a flowchart to help plan out our app. After getting a rough draft done, we digitized it on Figma, which was extremely helpful because we could work in real-time with each other on one single design, unlike some other programs. Figma also allowed us to read the code behind our design's interface, which was very helpful in our early programming steps when we went in blindly. We were completely new to app building and fluctuated between almost every platform possible (MIT App Inventor, then Flutter, then Thunkable, then...), but we eventually settled on App Lab from Code.org because of its simple and recognizable interface.
Challenges 💪
we ran into
As mentioned earlier, we were very iffy about how we planned to build our app. The constant transfer from platform to platform required us to download, redownload, and learn new content, which lost us much time. This goes hand-in-hand with our time management and how precious it was in the long run. There was also the fact that our main UI designer, Airi, didn't have a (functional) mouse and had to use a trackpad, so that may have caused some physical and mental damage cramps...
Accomplishments 🏆
that we're proud of
Despite our doubts in the beginning, we were able to create an app that we can be sure would be accessible and help a wide range of if not all people. This experience also allowed us to bond further as a group of friends; we scraped past the surface of just team member titles as we travailed through work sessions that went from 2-hour Instagram calls to 5-hour, in-person meetings at Amy's house.
What we learned 📖
in this competition
In terms of the competition itself, we paid the price for poor time management in the beginning and only leaving so many hours before submission. Researching, however, positively opened our eyes to the community around us and allowed us to learn more about it. In development, we got comfortable with using Figma and App Lab, hence allowing us to gain useful skills in such areas. Overall, this experience has taught us valuable lessons in project management, problem-solving, and teamwork.
What's next ⏭️
for ASCLEPS
We're hoping to expand the library of diagnoses we provide on the app. We also want to add more accessibility settings for those who may be impaired, like including text-to-speech for those who are blind or creating customizable UI color palettes to combat color blindness and create a better user experience.
