Inspiration
This game was inspired by a study performed by our school's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. The study focused on the efficacy of games as a supplement for learning, and included some in-class examples. We took that concept and built a game designed to teach players habits that are healthy for both the players and the Earth.
What it does
Artie's Tale melds entertaining gameplay with educational principles to teach future generations how to take care of the environment and reduce the impacts of pollution on vulnerable animals.
How we built it
The game was built in the Unity Game Engine, and utilizes hand-drawn sprites made with FireAlpaca and Clip Studio Paint.
Challenges we ran into
Partway through the process of building the game, we were forced to remake many of the games sprites due to certain animation and visual incompatibilities.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was our first time working on any sort of project together, and we probably bit off more then we could chew. Eventually, though, we were able to pull together and build a game, and we are immensely proud of ourselves for just this achievement.
What we learned
Taking a little time at the start of the project to clearly define its scope would have saved us a lot of time. Even under a time constraint, planning is extremely important.
What's next for Artie's Tale
We strongly believe in the power of games as an educational tool. And we've barely nicked the surface. In the future, we'd love to expand the game by delving further into the effects of pollution and climate change, as well as adding new mechanics and environments to explore.
