Inspiration

The inception of "Argus" was driven by an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the countless individuals navigating the world of online engagements. I was inspired by the age-old tales of Argus Panoptes, a vigilant guardian with a hundred eyes, always watchful and protective. As the virtual world began to intersect more with our physical realities, stories of unsafe meet-ups, tragic dates, and dubious item exchanges became alarmingly frequent. It became evident that the digital realm needed its modern-day Argus, a sentinel that would prioritize user safety above all else. This application was conceived to ensure that everyone, regardless of their intent—be it a budding romance or a simple item exchange—can do so within a secure and monitored environment, free from the looming shadows of harm or deceit.

What it does

Argus is a comprehensive safety platform designed to empower individuals during private transactions and social encounters. Leveraging real-time location tracking and audio recording, the app provides an extra layer of security for users meeting through online marketplaces or dating apps. With features like automated emergency contact notifications and a user verification system, Argus aims to create a safer environment for both buyers and sellers, as well as those venturing into new social interactions. Invite friends and family to monitor your meetings in real-time, ensuring peace of mind for all parties involved.

How we built it

  • Backend: Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB
  • Frontend: React.js, Chakra UI
  • Real-time Communication: Socket.io
  • Audio Handling: GridFS
  • Location Services: Google Maps API
  • Deployment: Heroku

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges in balancing real-time location tracking with user privacy. Integrating diverse technologies like web-sockets and MongoDB, especially for audio storage, was no small feat. Creating a user-friendly interface that could handle these complex features was also a hurdle we had to overcome.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully integrated a multi-layered safety system that combines user verification, real-time location tracking, and audio recording, setting a new standard in personal safety apps.
  • Developed an automated SMS notification and check-in system that has the potential to be a lifesaver, providing an immediate line of communication to emergency contacts or services. ## What we learned
  • Gained hands-on experience in managing real-time data streams, particularly in the context of location tracking and audio recording, which are both sensitive and require secure, efficient handling.
  • Acquired a deeper understanding of the legal and ethical implications surrounding user data, especially in the context of personal safety and emergency response.

What's next for Argus - Swipe, Sell, and Meet Safely

As Argus looks to the future, our mission remains rooted in user safety, but the scope of how we ensure this is ever-evolving. We're venturing into enhanced real-time location sharing, with user consent, that offers dynamic safety routes for meet-ups. AI-driven safety alerts, based on regional and local incident data, will give users insights into the safest times and places to meet.
