Inspiration

Our team took inspiration for Arena Legends from previous games we created and from turn-based strategy games like Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Fire Emblem Fates.

What it does

Our game is a 7x7 turn-based arena battler. First, you select 3 characters from 6 different options. Then, you place them on your side of the arena. And then... well... you battle!

These 6 characters are: Rex, a strong point ranged character; Cole, a heavy-hitting and tanky melee character; Hearth, a ranged splasher; Alex, a melee splasher; Kayla, a ranged character who heals allies every turn; and Max, who inflicts the poison status effect on enemies.

We also created multiple different arenas with different types of obstacles, and a menu for the game with many different screens.

How we built it

We used "Brackets," created by Adobe Systems, for the code. For the design aspect, we used "Gravit," and we made music online using Beepbox.

Challenges we ran into

Our team had technical difficulties throughout the 24-hour hackathon. First off, we had to find something we could all use; with Mac, 64-bit Windows, 32-bit Windows, and Chromebook computers involved, it took us two hours to get started.

Then, a parent demanded that the main computer running the project was to be taken hostage for "necessary updates," taking away a lot of productivity for another hour of the project.

We also were one down on the team with someone having to leave for family reasons.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a full game in less than 24 hours, and we did so in a language and format that none of us were really familiar with.

What I learned

We all learned how to program in a new language, and we all made music and graphics for the game, which we haven't really done before.

What's next for Arena Legends

Who knows? Maybe an iOS port, or some new characters...
