Inspiration

Microaggressions are the thinly veiled, everyday instances of racism, homophobia, sexism (and more) that we see in everyday life. Sometimes it's an insult, other times it's an errant comment or gesture. Despite efforts to embrace diversity, women, and members of racial, ethnic, and gender minority groups. Many continue to experience microaggressions. Data indicate that microaggressions are linked to low self-esteem, increased stress levels, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.

We created our app, Are You Aware, to raise awareness of common biases and their impact on people. With increased awareness, we can create a more harmonious society and a better future for all.

What it does

Players begin the game by looking at the prompt for the game, which is "Which of the following is a microaggression?". Players need to choose one of four answers for each question. Each answer has the associated prize money from $2000 to $1,000,000.

Players have three lifelines: Phone a Friend, Ask the Audience, and 50-50. Each of these can be used only once. The 50-50 option eliminates two incorrect answers. The Phone a Friend option will use Twilio to send the question the player has as a text message (SMS) to a friend, that is to us the creators of the game, which will then be answered.

If players use Ask the audience, they will receive a random guess for the answer from the audience.

How we built it

We built our app using Python Pygame and Twilio. We hosted it on Replit.

Challenges we ran into

It was a bit difficult for us to integrate Twilio into our app, as it was the first time we had ever used Twilio, and faced a learning curve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to build this game in a day and integrate it with Twilio.

What we learned

We learned how to use Twilio's message function to send messages, as well as how to better use pygame.

What's next for Are You Aware?

We hope to add more topics to "Are You Aware?", to make people aware of more social issues present in our everyday lives.
