Inspiration

With the debut of Meta Orion, we are glancing at the future of AR. Apps developed for these truly portable AR glasses will move away from showing flat UIs and focus more on merging with the real world. However, existing app stores for XR applications still rely only on 2D content, which cannot fully convey the experiences and capabilities of AR apps. For this project, I reimagined the design of an app store for future AR glasses and explored spatial UI designs.

How I built it

Used Bezi for 3D assets. Prototyped using A-frame and ThreeJS.

Challenges I ran into

Prototyping spatial interactions (e.g. distance grab) using WebXR is underexplored. I needed to implement many of these interactions from scratch.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Demonstrating various spatial UI ideas and the possibility of adding more spatial interactions in WebXR.

What I learned

Since I started prototyping with Aframe without having a concrete design. My code is really unoptimized and messy. Frankly, I debated whether to link my code or not because I was embarrassed by it. In the end, I still decided to show it. After gaining more experience with Aframe and ThreeJS in this project, I would structure my code very differently.

What's next for AR APP Store

The design is still rough around the edges, and the prototype is not fully functional. I hope to keep refining the design and prototype so more people can experience the prototype themselves.
