Inspiration:
Weeks before the event our team came together with the shared desire to create a game. When we received the prompt "boosting productivity" we decided to work around that knowing we were interested in creating a game.
What it does:
Anti-Depression follows a young man who recognizes he wants to change, pursues this change, and eventually reaches his goals. The goal of the game is to collect items useful to his particular stage in life. Between each stage of life, a short narrative is provided.
How we built it:
Our game was wholly developed in the Godot engine, taking features from pixel art creator Piskel and VSCode's text editing features to create a compelling story. GitHub was used to work collaboratively across all five group members.
Obstacles We Overcame:
Because it was much of the group's first time working on Godot, or coding in general, we had to learn how to use a new game engine in less than 24 hours and come out with a result. Another obstacle we had to overcome was managing the many incoming merges of GitHub, especially so when some code would interact poorly. Namely, in the final hours of our submission, our code became fully corrupted and required a large revert to a previous branch, causing some small artistic details to be lost.
Proud Accomplishments
Our team is incredibly proud of our designer's sprite art and the cozy aesthetic of the game. We are also satisfied with the zoomed-in camera that smoothly follows the player across our levels.
What's Next for Anti-Depression
There are multitudes of opportunities we wanted to implement but couldn't get to in the short frame. This includes the NPCs we created art for, as well as some background audio. While we may continue separately, as we met each other solely for this event, future updates are not out of the question and we hope you stay tuned!
