Inspiration
Inspired by Ankit Kapoor, who helped our team members significantly during our INFO1110 days. We wished to replicate the tremendous help from Ankit by creating a dinosaur mascot that aims to help students achieve their academic goals.
What it does
Dinokit is a user-friendly website designed to assist university students in creating an effective study platform. It offers a task organizer, grade calculator, and time management functions. Students can personalize their Dino mascot by achieving goals and maintaining consistent activity. Our goal was to address university students' motivation and organizational challenges. Unlike mobile-based apps that often lead to distractions, Dinokit is a computer-based platform featuring a motivating dinosaur mascot and customization rewards. This approach keeps students focused within their workspace, minimizing phone-related interruptions. The integrated grade calculator helps students stay aware of their target marks, aiding them in planning study tasks for assignments and exams.
How we built it
To give shape to our idea, we turned to Figma to create a prototype demo. Yet, hurdles arose with Swift, as not all team members were proficient in the language, hampering app development. Instead, we opted for a website, leveraging broader accessibility and focusing on our team's web development strengths. This decision aimed to provide a distraction-free user experience, aligning with our concept's core purpose.
Challenges we ran into
The utilization of Swift brought both potential and challenges. While Swift offered robust features, its complexity proved challenging due to varying team members' familiarity. This highlighted the need for unified skill levels and effective time management to bridge the knowledge gap. Ultimately, these challenges influenced our decision to transition towards a website for streamlined development and efficient resource allocation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The sense of pride surrounding our website's creation in just one day is a testament to our team's dedication and synergy. We streamlined our efforts to maximize efficiency through meticulous planning and unwavering focus.
We began with a clear and concise concept, ensuring everyone aligned with the project's objectives. Each team member was assigned specific roles based on their strengths, allowing us to work seamlessly in parallel.
Swift decision-making was essential. We didn't linger on minor details; instead, we prioritized features that directly contributed to the app's core functionality. This minimized scope creep and kept our momentum strong.
We are proud of the website we built, as we know we will be using it too (and it's so cute!)
What we learned
The past two days have been invaluable lessons in both time management and the breadth of skills within our team. With a team of four, we've witnessed firsthand how effective planning and collaboration can yield remarkable results.
Our collective efforts have highlighted the potential of utilizing time efficiently. By setting clear objectives and allocating tasks based on each team member's expertise, we've maximized our productivity. The realization that proper time allocation can significantly impact outcomes is a takeaway that will undoubtedly shape our future projects.
Moreover, exploring the diverse skills within our team has been eye-opening. Each member's unique strengths have played a crucial role in shaping the outcome. From concept ideation to implementation, our combined skill set allowed us to tackle various aspects of the project with confidence.
This experience has reinforced the significance of recognizing and capitalizing on individual talents. It's not just about completing tasks; it's about leveraging the collective skills to enhance the overall quality of our work.
What's next for Ankit Kapoor
The upcoming phases of refining and launching our project hold exciting potential for growth and user engagement. As we move forward, our focus on continuous improvement and expansion can pave the way for a more robust and feature-rich offering.
The addition of new features, such as calendars in the to-do list and customization options, promises to elevate the value we provide to users. Integrating a calendar function can offer enhanced organization and time management capabilities. Meanwhile, offering customization options allows users to tailor the app to their preferences, fostering a sense of ownership and personalization.
Contributions
Michella: As the lead designer, Michella orchestrated the Figma design for all pages, curating the website's aesthetics, color palette, and UX components. She focused on enhancing usability and user interaction throughout the site. Additionally, Michella crafted the graphics, including the distinctive bottom tabs and mascot.
Shen: Integral to the project's initial stages, Shen significantly contributed to app planning, shaping ideas, and strategizing code implementation. While primarily leading the Swift development, due to time constraints and team skill levels, the project pivoted to using HTML.
Rina: While lending support to Shen's Swift efforts, Rina emerged as the key HTML coder, instrumental in bringing the project to life. She adeptly translated the Figma design into a functional prototype and implemented various interactive features.
Sarah: A pivotal team member, Sarah orchestrated the video composition and finalized the submission script. She played a central role in brainstorming sessions and emerged as a motivating force within the team. Her proactive communication ensured a comprehensive understanding of the website's functions, priming the team for interactions with the judges.
