The world is a dangerous place. From medical mixups to automobile accidents to even at-home mishaps, it can almost seem like danger is nearly impossible to avoid and overcome. Our team knew this when entering this project, and we knew that this was our chance to make a difference. Therefore, we created our app, Amity.
Amity is a safety app. Its goal is to keep you safe wherever you are and with whatever you face. With features such as its immense catalog of accurate and digestible safety percussions and tips, former days of reading lengthy articles in order to obtain knowledge during a crisis are long gone. Amity also acknowledges that information is not only needed for the ones in the crisis, but others as well. With Amity’s 9-1-1 alert feature, users are not only able to call for help with ease, but also send their location so officials know exactly where to find them all in a single tap. Our Crisis Contact Button also serves the user in times of need by sending a pre-written message, along with their location, to their closest friends and family. Even further, Amity acknowledges that, in a crisis situation, one can feel powerless or overwhelmed. Therefore, with Amity’s Keep Calm feature, users can have access to relaxing breathing techniques and grounding affirmations to ensure their mental well-being during a difficult time.
We built this app with the use of the website, MIT App Inventor. Because we had no prior experience with coding, we knew we had to make use of a beginner’s software. However, we still tried our best to make our app as navigable and as user-friendly as possible.
The largest challenge we faced was our lack of experience. When coming into this challenge, we were truly intimidated with the daunting task of creating an app, and even coding, as we had never done something like this before.
Our team is proud of our willingness to even enter this competition in the first place. This unfamiliar world of app development and coding was incredibly frightening at first, but we tried our best and created an app that, before this competition, we wouldn’t have even thought we could have made ourselves.
Our team learned valuable lessons during the process of building Amity. We learned how to properly work as a team to manage the many tasks that came with, not only building the app itself, but also pitching it and presenting it to our community. We also learned that we should not fear taking risks and pursuing new experiences, as they can lead to great opportunities to learn and grow. For example, we did not only learn more about app development, but also about how to create a captivating video pitch. All of these things would not have been possible without this experience, and our team is ever so grateful to have been a part of this journey.
As a team, we hope to finish what we started. Before we even started building our app, we had many complex plans that we knew were simply too great of a challenge to fit into a functional app within the timeframe we were given. For example, we marveled at the idea of creating a feature that would allow for emergency locations, from hospitals to police departments to even veterinary clinics, to be visible and accessible to users on a map. But we knew that this would be much too complicated to handle in time. Therefore, even after the competition, we intend to revisit some of these wild and more complex ideas and see what our new coding and designing skills can do for the sake of the future of, not only our app, but what our app can do for our community.
