Inspiration
Alzheimer's Dementia is the most common form of Dementia, affected about 80% of all Dementia patients. With how widespread the current pandemic has become, we felt that other diseases were not being thought of as dangerous, and felt that we should draw attention
What it does
Alz-Check offers a variety of resources, pre-appointment checks, training, and support systems meant to help those experiencing the varied symptoms of Alzheimer's Dementia, and provide support to those who need it.
How we built it
We used a combination of our strengths in multiple areas, such as Web Dev, Unity, and Machine Learning. We wanted to make sure that we chose a project that was not only possible to do within the given span of time, but also sustainable and something which was truly helpful.
Challenges we ran into
We wanted to create a sustainable, scalable interface for those facing the challenges of Alzheimer's and the various conditions that comes with it. We were also determined to create a support database of other patients who had used the site and found help from the site. Our biggest challenge was our learning algorithm for the quiz questions, which dynamically adapts and changes questions based on patient responses that have been confirmed to have or not have this particular dementia. The algorithm is run on Google's Compute Cloud services. We adapted the algorithm for our two games, which update frequently to become the best possible detector for Alzheimer's Dementia.
What we learned
We've learned the most about machine learning and it's applications, not only within the technology field, but within a variety of other fields like the medical industry. We worked with the google maps and places APIs to creates accurate and up-to-date maps of helpful resources that people in need can turn to when they need it, and learnt
What's next for Alz-Check
We hope to expand Alz-Check to other dangerous diseases which are not talked about as often as they should be. Alz-Check is just the beginning of an entire database of support systems, resources, and pre-checks for a variety of other diseases to help anyone who needs them, become the first - and last place that a person who needs help goes to.
