Inspiration

After watching a video about how businesses throw away fresh and unexpired food in the streets of New York we decided to create a web app to tackle the problem of waste and hunger and later on expand on the idea of re-usability.

What it does

Allyment is a web platform that connects the four actors: Glearners, NPOs, Food Banks, and Individuals/Families. It does so by bringing all of the actors together to reduce waste and hunger. The idea is simple:

  1. Register on our website
  2. Pick your category Glearner, NPO, Food Bank, or Individual/Family
  3. Donate or recieve

Its that easy!

How we built it

Front end of the website is running HTML/CSS/JS to serve our users. The back end utilizes Flask-API and Python to implement all the API calls. SQLite is used as database storage.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was time and experience of some of the members as tasks had to be delegated on their experiences.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Currently we have a fully deployable API that we are planning to open source and will be available to anyone.

What we learned

Our youngest member is a Freshman and he learned a lot about python and API development, so did others on the team. Everyone got the feel of working in a team environment to develop a fully working application in just 36 hours!

What's next for Allyment

We are planning to add features to the website such as:

  • Create a phone app to go along with the web app for ease of use and access
  • Create plugins for popular inventory systems to integrate with the API
  • Partner with NPOs and Gleaner to kickstart the ecosystem
