Inspiration
In conversations about new technology, the elderly are often excluded regardless of the fact that these systems can be leveraged for their benefit. Problems senior citizens often face include mobile and cognitive decline, and social isolation. Augmented Reality (AR) can be used to combat these challenges. We wanted to create a co-located experience for seniors that would allow fun, light exercise that came with social interaction, and could be played anywhere for ease of use. Just like that, ALL ABOARD was born!
What it does
ALL ABOARD is a gentle AR obstacle course game that requires two players. Player One draws an AR path on the floor that turns into a small river. Once the river is formed, a boat appears with a rope coming out of either side. Player One and Player Two stand on opposite banks of the river and each pick up a rope. Walking together, they steer the boat down the river using the ropes to their destination (i.e. a lighthouse) while avoiding running the boat into the river banks.
How we built it
We built the river path creation functionality using World Query and World Mesh. The curve of the river is based off of floor position as selected by the user. The co-location was done using Spectacle Sync Kit. Boat a rope physics were done using the interaction kit.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We would like to highlight the visuals of our experience. In AR interaction experiences, design of 3D objects are often neglected. We custom built all our 3D models, with special attention given to evoke a sense of calm and relaxation so the game is a peaceful experience instead of a stressful one.
What's next for ALL ABOARD
Next steps would include adding more game mechanics, such as different levels and rewards for completing courses. Additionally, pre-set river obstacle courses that users could choose from could be a nice addition for those not wanting to design their own custom path.
