Inspiration
Given the prompt "link", we put our heads together and created Alchemy Tinder!
The inspiration behind this project came from the nostalgia of games like Infinite Craft and Doodle Alchemy. We wanted to capture the same satisfaction of merging items - but with our own approach! The UI takes inspiration from classic mobile games with a simple, memorable design, and the hand-drawn characters add a light, cartoon feel.
What it does
Become a matchmaker for elements by swiping left or right to form the desired compounds!
Alchemy Tinder is a game about linking elements together to form a target compound. The player acts as a chemist watching reactions under a microscope, accepting or rejecting elements to find the right combinations. With speed and accuracy, the goal is to create the "Winning compound" and beat previous scores. Through anthropomorphizing elements through love (via their chemistry), Alchemy Tinder takes a new twist on the classic alchemy merging game.
How we built it
It was built using the Godot 4.5 engine, with Celsys Studio, GIMP, Clip Studio Paint, and paint.NET used to create the graphical assets, and FL Studio for the music. We also used an open source font and a few sound effects, all of which are documented in our README.
Challenges we ran into
It was the first time some of us had worked in a group together, and some of us had little to no Godot knowledge. As a result, there was time required to figure out each other's strengths and work best to complete the project. The managing and delegation of work to suit each of our individual strengths initially slowed us down, but it paid off as we supported each other, lending our respective strengths where another might struggle. Git has always proved to be an amazing tool, but it did come with some hiccups; thankfully, it was just a few merge conflicts, and luckily, we had members with enough experience and patience to resolve these issues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Just being able to create something playable and complete in such a time constraint is already a huge accomplishment, and being able to do it with old and new friends while growing skills is awesome. The whole team can agree on the amazing hand-drawn sprites, and the goofiness along the way made it memorable.
What we learned
Teamwork has and always will be a part of great projects, and is a skill that you never stop improving, as showcased by our amazing team. Planning, reflection, and adaptability made a big difference in our progress. Thus, we improved our project management skills by learning how to organize work, balance strengths, and handle problems efficiently.
