Airate is bringing to market our first product named Canary: a small, portable noxious fume detector with components to detect, measure, and alert users in real-time of harmful gas levels in the air and give specific recommendations on what actions should be made to get to safety.

Canary will be able to detect carbon monoxide, LPG, butane, methane, natural gas, smoke, carbon dioxide, and other flammable gases. It will also be able to provide general air quality analysis and detect microparticles to warn users of dangers like asbestos. The air quality data will be displayed by an LCD screen with an LED to indicate the air rating. The data can also be viewed in more detail on mobile devices via Bluetooth low energy connection. As for the alert system, there will be a siren built into the product and a mobile app that will provide push notifications if the air quality or the concentration of gases in the air becomes dangerous. The long term goal for our product is to create a map feature that can show users the extent of a gas leak, helping them find safety more easily. This can be achieved with a network of sensors that indicate which sensors are in the red (dangerous), yellow (caution), or green (safe) zone.

Given our proposed small form factor, our product gives users a broad range of application functionality. Canary primarily targets businesses and NGOs working in third world countries. This is because it is our goal to help those without the ability to detect toxic gases avoid the dangers posed by these gases and we believe that these businesses and organizations can serve as a distribution channel for our devices. Canary would be placed in industrial facilities (ie. construction, metallurgy, etc.) and in outdoor working environments to protect workers from potential disasters and minimize costs by reducing new worker acquisitions. Expanding on this target segment, a potentially highly successful target would be humanitarian groups, such as the Red Cross and UNICEF, who want to protect camps and local homes from noxious fumes by placing these portable detectors inside when stationed in third world countries with little regulations. The detector will also target individual consumers or workers who live or work in polluted places later on. We hope to provide value through a means of safety as the best way to add an additional layer of protection to people’s lives, whether it be giving people extra comfort in their safety or introducing the first method of protection in homes all around the globe.
