AIHacks: Project ALAN

Inspiration

The only thing that can unlock a better future for anyone in the world is education. It is the key to a stable, successful life, but many children do not have the opportunities or the resources to break the cycle of poverty. We are lucky enough to have the opportunity to learn here at AIHacks, so Project ALAN wants to give others the chance to elevate their lives through education.

What it does

Our platform connects students (who would greatly benefit from a free tutoring service) to quality volunteer tutors. The website allows students and teachers to input contact information and a preferred subject, and then matches the tutors to the students based on the subject.

How I built it

The HTML website is made up of several pages. The Main Page allows the user to select "Student Page" or "Tutor Page," and from there either option would enter necessary information. Currently, we only have three functioning pages, but we had originally planned to have several more consisting of log ins.

Challenges I ran into

Project ALAN is made up of four inexperienced yet ambitious coders. We decided to create an HTML website, and struggled a lot with figuring out how to collect user input and store it in a way that will allow us to provide that information on another page. With the help of a mentor, we discovered a channel that would explain and possibly carry out what we wanted, but even then it still took a lot of hard work to understand the new content.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are especially proud of the fact that all four of us learned three languages to achieve this. Specifically, we learned to integrate Python to HTML and HTML to CSS. We found out how all languages are equally important to create a successful website.

What I learned

In addition to the informative workshops throughout the day, we learned to troubleshoot countless errors. As beginner coders, we ran into many defects with our code and our team worked together to fix them. We also figured out how to create a comprehensive project with multiple parts that interact with each other.

What's next for AIHacks: Project ALAN

In the future, Project ALAN plans to expand upon this project with more time and experience. We genuinely would like to see this platform effectively become implemented and solve this growing issue.
