Inspiration

What if your plants could chat with you, tell you how they're feeling, and remind you when they need a little love? Inspired by the nostalgic joy of Tamagotchis and the magic of AI, we created Plant-Pal an adorable, sassy digital plant buddy who’s alive with personality and powered by smart sensors and AI magic. It’s like having a Tamagotchi, but for your real-life leafy friends!

What it does

Plant-Pal keeps an eye on your plant’s mood by sensing soil moisture, temperature, and humidity through an ESP32 gadget. This clever little green buddy uses a powerful AI language model to talk back with sass, charm, and puns telling you when it’s parched, chilly, or just downright happy.

How we built it

-Tiny Plant Caretaker: An ESP32 microcontroller equipped with sensors collects real-time data from its leafy companion.

Cloud-Powered Chatbot: We powered up GPT-OSS-20B, a brainy AI model hosted in the cloud via Modal Labs, to generate Plant-Pal’s lively conversations.
Mood Matcher: Based on sensor data, Plant-Pal decides if it’s feeling sunny and cheerful or a bit stressed, and changes its chat accordingly.
Interactive API: Users send sensor info and receive chatty responses through a clean, easy-to-use REST API.
Alert System: Discord notifications pop up with colourful messages and plant personality flair whenever moods shift or attention is needed.
Sassy & Lovable: The AI is given a quirky, slightly dramatic personality just like a Tamagotchi, making plant care fun and interactive.

Challenges we ran into

Keeping Plant-Pal’s WiFi connection stable was like trying to keep a Tamagotchi happy in a noisy classroom, and sometimes tricky!
We also wrestled with managing a giant AI model in the cloud without slowing things down

What we learned

The quirks of running big AI models in the cloud and keeping interactions snappy. Prompt engineering can make or break an AI’s personality, especially when aiming for sass and charm.
