Inspiration

According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, over 65,000 qualified applicants were not accepted into nursing schools last year due to staffing shortages. Programs face challenges such as a lack of faculty, limited clinical placements, and insufficient preceptors for student supervision. Our Meta Human Nurse Assistant aims to address these issues by providing an accessible and engaging learning experience. By acting as an AI teaching assistant, NurseAI helps teachers manage larger class sizes and equips them with tools to effectively engage students. This approach not only alleviates pressure on traditional nursing programs but also contributes to addressing the nursing workforce crisis.

What it does

NurseAI is a virtual teacher's assistant designed to support nursing educators in guiding their students towards obtaining their RN license. It offers personalized lessons and engaging interactions, enhancing the overall learning experience. This allows educators to focus on more complex aspects of teaching while ensuring students receive consistent and high-quality support throughout their education.

The avatar was trained in 3 main areas:

• Learn about Nursing Programs
• Start Modules
• Asking Nursing-related questions

How I built it

For the conversational AI, we prompt engineered and fine-tuned OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 model in the with Documents of Nursing Programs in United States, with the following configuration settings:

• Max Response Length: 300 words
• Creativity: Stick to the facts
• Knowledge Match Cutoff: Balanced

For the training modules of the Avatar, we used the NLP Dialogflow ES model and integrated the GCP credentials into the console. For the Avatar we use an engine to create and customize our hyper realistic avatar that integrates with the Fine-tuned LLM and the NLP model.

Challenges I ran into

One of the main challenges we encountered was ensuring that NurseAI could respond quickly enough to create a seamless and realistic interaction. Achieving low latency is crucial to ensure the AI feels like a real human conversation partner, enhancing the overall user experience.

We are proud of creating an interactive and engaging learning tool that has the potential to make a significant impact on nursing education.

What I learned

During the development of NurseAI, we gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of nursing education and the challenges faced by students and educators. We explored various techniques for fine-tuning large language models (LLMs), such as QLoRa. This illustrated how AI assistants can feasibly ease teachers' workloads by providing consistent support to students. We also learned the importance of maintaining personable interactions to strengthen the teacher-student connection, ensuring that learning remains engaging and enjoyable for everyone involved.

What's next for NurseAI

Moving forward, we plan to expand NurseAI’s capabilities by incorporating more advanced simulations and additional languages to reach a broader audience. We also aim to partner with nursing schools and healthcare organizations to further integrate our tool into formal education programs. Our ultimate goal is to contribute to solving the nursing shortage by making high-quality nursing education more accessible and effective.
