Inspiration

AfriSolve was born out of the urgent need to empower underserved rural communities in Nigeria with technology that respects cultural identity while solving real-world challenges. In Buruku LGA, Benue State, we witnessed farmers lacking financial tracking tools, health workers without access to referral systems, and youth disconnected from the digital economy. We were driven by a single conviction: the best tech for Africa must be built in Africa, by Africans.

What It Does

AfriSolve is a grassroots digital platform that delivers simple, smart, and culturally grounded tools in agriculture, healthcare, and education. Current features include:

FarmFinance – A mobile-first farm record-keeping and planning tool for smallholder farmers.

OrtwerAI – A multilingual health assistant accessible via SMS and voice, built to serve low-connectivity regions.

Together, they empower communities with mobile-accessible tools tailored for local infrastructure and cultural relevance.

How We Built It

We developed the MVP using HTML and CSS for the interface, Formspree for handling form submissions, and Google Sheets as a lightweight backend. WhatsApp and Canva supported collaborative prototyping with community members. Twilio was integrated for SMS and WhatsApp notifications. All tools were chosen with rural constraints—like low internet and intermittent power—in mind.

Challenges We Encountered

No external funding: The entire MVP was bootstrapped with a zero-dollar budget.

Messaging integration issues: SMS and WhatsApp routing required creative API workarounds.

Infrastructure barriers: Testing was impacted by poor internet and unstable electricity.

Balancing identity and scale: We had to maintain cultural authenticity while ensuring technical scalability.

Accomplishments We're Proud Of

Launched a fully functional MVP with mobile-first usability.

Secured real sign-ups from early adopters in Buruku.

Embedded local identity by integrating Tiv proverbs and visual design elements.

Created modular, scalable digital tools applicable across other African rural communities.

What We Learned

Community collaboration drives stronger adoption.

Simplicity is powerful — low-tech can still be high-impact.

Embedding culture into tech builds instant trust and relevance.

What’s Next for AfriSolve

Roll out new modules including WaterAccess Tracker and SchoolOutWatch for monitoring school dropouts.

Localize the platform by translating UI and voice responses into Tiv, Idoma, Igbo, and Hausa.

Expand the pilot in Buruku with weekly usage reporting and training sessions.

Establish partnerships with NGOs and government agencies for state-wide deployment.

Integrate microfinance access and electronic health record (EHR) capabilities for a unified development platform.

AfriSolve is more than just an app — it's a cultural movement, a platform for empowerment, and a bold declaration that Africa is ready to build solutions that reflect her stories, values, and genius.
