## Inspiration

In Ghana and across many African countries, legal support is out of reach for millions. Lawyers are concentrated in urban areas, legal advice is expensive, and the justice system often feels like it was not made for everyday people. Add language barriers, and it becomes nearly impossible for millions of people to access the law. They are left abused and cheated and the perpetrators of these go scott free and do it to the next person.

We were inspired to bring legal firstaid , empowerment and justice intervention directly to everyone —via the platform they already use every day: WhatsApp , and in their preferred local language.

## What we built

Advis Legal Assistant is an AI-powered chatbot that lives on WhatsApp and provides legal first aid , projection and guidance in local languages. Users can present their cases and questions via voice or text, and receive simple, culturally appropriate answers about their legal rights, steps they can take, and even generate legal documents such as complaint letters or affidavits.

After a user selects their language , gender and location , they can submit their case or question via text or audio Our solution instantly returns *personalized understanding of the case and assurance of help , tells them whether the case is legal worthy or can be resolved internally , gives them a projection of how long, how much and the possible outcomes if they choose to pursue it , and the nearest and most successful legal service *

The tool uses multilingual AI, legal Q&A templates, and a local referral engine to connect users to legal support they otherwise couldn’t afford or reach.

## How we built it

  • Built using bolt.new with multi-language AI prompt logic
  • Simulated WhatsApp chat experience for testing (MVP via web interface)
  • Created a legal Q&A knowledgebase focused on high-priority issues (land, abuse, tenant rights, family law, etc.)
  • Added translation layers for Twi, Ewe, Hausa, and Dagbani
  • Developed logic for generating legal letter templates based on voice/text input
  • Designed a referral logic (category/location-based) for future integration with NGOs and legal clinics

## What we learned

Justice isn’t just about courts—it’s about clarity. People don’t act because they’re afraid , confused, or dont even know where and who to start with. - not because they’re guilty or wrong. We learned the power of explaining legal rights in someone’s mother tongue, and how transformative that can be.

We also learned that legal language must be radically simplified to build trust, especially when delivered through AI.

## Challenges we faced

  • Translating legal jargon into everyday language while keeping it accurate
  • Designing AI prompts that don’t sound robotic or intimidating
  • Ensuring user privacy on a platform like WhatsApp
  • Balancing AI help with clear signals for when to refer to a real human lawyer
  • Handling voice-to-text errors in local dialects

🔧 Built with

  • Bolt.new
  • OpenAI GPT-4 (multilingual prompt tuning)
  • Twilio / WhatsApp API (for production deployment)
  • Legal knowledgebase (structured by topic and local context)
  • PDFKit or HTML2PDF (for document export)
  • Custom local language translation dictionaries and phrase guides
