Inspiration

Our inspiration as first years was that we wanted to enjoy/get to know the city of Kingston. We realised that there was a lack of social interlinkage, and current methods to find events/places, such as google maps, were often unreliable. We wanted to create an easy-use, reliable app that connects the students and residents of Kingston closer together.

What it does

Our app allows users to access our database filled with activities running in Kingston. With the creation of an account, users will be able to create their own events as well. The best part is that users can search up specifically what types of events they are interested in. We also have features such as "search by date", if a user wants to search up all events happening on a specific day, or even our dice roll, where it provides users with a completely random event in our database to spice it up.

How we built it

We used python and its built-in library tkinter for UI. We stored all event/account information in text/csv files.

Challenges we ran into

Time management. We are all new to hackathons, so we had to learn a lot of stuff on the spot. This also led to us making many mistakes, so in all, our time management was poor.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of everything we accomplished. We are proud that we got a working demo with UI. We were also quite ambitious during the brainstorming phase, and we got most of our ideas working, which is nice.

What we learned

We all learned how to use python's library tkinter to make good-looking, functional graphical user interfaces. We also learned the importance of communication in a team, along with the organization of our code, thoughts, and ideas.

What's next for Active Kingston

Turn our demo into an actual downloadable app.
