What inspired us

The theme of the event was retro Miami so we used that as a jumping off point, which lead us to the idea of a travel guide. We were inspired by the abilities and creativity of our teammates and user research. We decided to target the accessible community because it is an area that is important and that lacks services.

The Problem

Disabled travelers to and even in Miami have difficulty finding accommodations and need an easy reference for travel.

Solution

Responsive website with an accessible travel guide for Miami.

What we learned

Three of our team of four had never hacked before so everything was new.

  1. Krista: Working with a team of developers remotely on a hack over one weekend was a great growth opportunity. I have not built a live hand coded site in a long time. GitHub, Replet, and Developer Tools were all new to me.
  2. Sabs: I learned that building a webpage is much more complicated than just putting code in an editor and calling it a day.
  3. Harper: I learned that the UI design and planning each element on each page beforehand is crucial to building a professional and functional website along with the coding.
  4. Lauryn: This was my first experience attending a hackathon. I learned a lot about time management and what truly goes into code development. I have learned CSS, HTML, and JavaScript

How we built our project We used Hand sketches, site flow, user flow, Figma for Lo-Fi and Hi-Fi wireframes and prototypes, GitHub, Photoshop, CSS, HTML, visual studio. We also took aspects of other webpages for inspiration and researched visuals on Pinterest.

Accomplishments

  1. Wrote a user survey, sent it out to collect data.
  2. Working prototype
  3. Live coded website
  4. Created branding and started a design system in Figma

Challenges we faced

  1. Original team was all new to hacking so there was a bit of confusion about the process.
  2. Time crunch, a weekend is a short period of time to create an MVP.
  3. No fresh user research. Based some concepts on research done in 2021 on accessible travel. We sent out a survey about traveling as a disabled individual or as their travel companion. It has a link to the hi-fi Figma prototype and asked for feedback on usability, navigation, and visual style. So far we haven’t gotten any responses.
  4. The team is still learning to code a live site.
  5. Sabs: The biggest challenge for me is trying to implement styling into the webpage. As a beginner, there's only so much I know how to do without googling every other aspect.
  6. Harper: One of the challenges I faced was as a beginner learning how to code each aspect the way we wanted and planned.
  7. Lauryn: One of the challenges I faced was, as a beginner, I had to spend a lot of time looking up how-tos and other resources. Next steps if we had more time
  8. Further iteration of code to more closely match the Figma prototype.
  9. For this first version we built a basic listing site with information and links to other websites. In stage two we would add the ability to create an account, favorite listings, connect with a guide, leave reviews, and book travel. For stage three 3D and VR walk throughs of the recommended businesses would be added.
  10. Refine the UI and create a more complete design system. Test our Project
