AAWAJ — About This Project

Why We Built This

In 2024, Nepal saw one of its largest waves of anti-corruption protests in a generation. Citizens took to the streets demanding accountability from a government that had long ignored them. They marched. They chanted. They risked everything to be heard.

We watched from our screens, thousands of miles away, and felt completely powerless.

That feeling of watching your country fight for change and having no way to help stayed with us. We kept asking the same question: what can we actually do? Not someday. Not in theory. Right now, with the skills we have.

The answer we kept coming back to was technology.

What We Are Fighting

Nepal ranks 110th out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perception Index. But the numbers don't capture what that actually means for ordinary Nepali citizens.

The corruption is not just tolerated — it is structurally protected. Reports disappear. Records get deleted. Officials deny. And citizens, without any permanent proof, are left with nothing.

The protests of 2024 showed us that Nepali citizens are done accepting this. They are ready to fight. We wanted to give them a tool to fight with.

What AAWAJ Is

AAWAJ means Voice in Nepali. It is a civic reporting platform where every complaint, every piece of evidence, and every government response is recorded permanently on the blockchain.

When a citizen submits a report, it gets stored on IPFS through Pinata — a decentralized storage network that no single government controls — and written to the Polygon blockchain. Once it is there, no official can delete it, deny it, or pretend it never existed. The report is public. The timestamp is permanent. The evidence is tamper-proof.

We designed AAWAJ specifically for Nepal's reality. Most citizens in rural Nepal have never heard of MetaMask or cryptocurrency. So we built a walletless system — citizens submit reports with just a phone and an internet connection. The blockchain works invisibly behind the scenes. The technology serves the people, not the other way around.

What We Are Fighting For

We are fighting for the family in Dolpa who waited ten days for food while officials claimed ignorance.

We are fighting for every Nepali citizen who spoke up and was met with silence.

AAWAJ does not solve corruption overnight. It does not replace the need for political will or institutional reform. But it removes the government's most powerful tool: deniability.

When every report is permanent, public, and on-chain — silence becomes impossible. Denial becomes impossible. And accountability, for the first time, becomes enforceable.

A Note From Our Team

We built AAWAJ at a hackathon, in a single day, because we could not stop thinking about the protests back home. About the people in the streets. About the voices that keep getting silenced.

This is not just a project. It is a message to every Nepali citizen who has ever been ignored. We would love to add further features in the future — including a donations system where blockchain and wallets will truly matter, letting people around the world directly fund communities in need.

We see you. We hear you. And now — so will everyone else.
