Inspiration
At UCF, they sometimes have events where they hand out free plants, usually succulents, out to students. Supposedly, succulents are the easiest to take over, barely requiring you to water them consistently. Unfortunately, something that we all had in common (all of us groupmates), was that we all lacked a green thumb, and we all had experience killing these plants, succulents included. We figured that getting to take care of plants online would be a more appropriate and fun alternative to taking care of plants in real life and thus, our game was born.
What it does
As it is in the early stages, we don't have too many functions available just yet. With more time, for sure we would have been able to include more features. What we do have so far is the barest and rawest version, the main objective being to protect designated plants from bugs.
How we built it
After brainstorming and establishing what we wanted to do, one of the first things we did was work on the plants themselves. Making sure they looked cute, we then continued to working on the bugs which, were initially just small dots on the plants. They of course evolved to how they look now. From there, we worked on adding a timer, a title, a counter, buttons, and of course, a background.
Challenges we ran into
We had problems all throughout our process. When we thought we'd manage to figure out one thing, boom! We'd have something else come up. All of us weren't very familiar with github so learning to use that was one issue. Aligning our elements and making sure they were the right size were also things we had to figure out. We had some trouble figuring out how to include the timer and also figuring out the timing of the bugs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite our problems, the fact that we were able to resolve and get through most of them is the main thing that we are proud of! For example, when we had trouble getting the timer in, utilizing help from mentors and the power of google, we were able to resolve that trouble.
What we learned
We learned what our strengths and weaknesses were as a team. For example, some of us were better at some programming languages. We also learned the importance of making sure to use all the resources that were available to us. For example, the help that the mentors provided were one decision we don't regret making and will continue to use in the future! And most of all, we learned the importance of taking breaks. Yes, we were in a bit of a time scrunch but also, making sure we were able to effectively do what we needed required us to not be burnt out, which would also require breaks!
What's next for A Garden Adventure!
Adding more levels, more obstacles, different ways to increase your score, and also upgrades to the general graphics!
