About the Project
Inspiration
The increasing frequency and sophistication of botnet attacks have made network security more crucial than ever. Inspired by the need for more effective real-time threat detection, we decided to develop a tool that could utilize machine learning to identify and alert users about potential botnet activity. Our goal was to create a solution that would not only help security professionals but also be accessible to smaller organizations with limited resources.
What I Learned
Throughout this project, I gained valuable experience in applying machine learning to network security. I learned how to implement and fine-tune a Random Forest classifier to detect malicious network traffic. I also explored how to work with network traffic data and integrate various tools such as Flask for building the user interface, Scapy for network packet analysis, and Chart.js for visualizing suspicious activity. Additionally, I learned about the importance of real-time processing and how to handle large volumes of network traffic efficiently.
How I Built It
The project was built using Python for its versatility and rich ecosystem of libraries. I used Flask to create a simple web interface for monitoring network traffic, while Scapy was employed to handle the network packet analysis. The core of the tool is a Random Forest classifier, trained on the DReLAB dataset, to detect suspicious network behavior and potential botnet activity. For real-time processing, I implemented a queue-based system to handle multiple files and provided automatic alerts with suspicious IP tracking.
Challenges Faced
One of the main challenges was ensuring that the tool could effectively handle large-scale network traffic data without performance slowdowns. Optimizing the machine learning model to reduce false positives and negatives also proved difficult, as botnet activity can often mimic normal behavior. Additionally, integrating real-time processing with a queue-based system presented some technical hurdles, as handling new incoming data efficiently was critical to the tool’s success. Lastly, ensuring robustness in error recovery was another key challenge to avoid losing data or encountering downtime during critical analysis.
Despite these challenges, the project helped me grow in both technical and problem-solving skills, and I’m proud of the final result.
