4.0 Me

Inspiration

No one is perfect, especially not students like us. Distractions, commitments, and bad habits are all factors that impact the performance of students in school. We wanted to make an application that can turn any student, no matter how bad their GPA or performance is, into a 4.0 honour student.

What it does

4.0 Me is a web application that guides students through the process of utilizing 3 proven study tips to help them achieve their academic goals.

How we built it

We used ASP.NET a web framework to develop the front and the back-end for user signup and login, in addition to allow for user flexibility and a seamless registration process. We leveraged OpenAI's API for the use of the integrated training bot where the student is trained in active recall - teaching the material to the AI as if it were a beginner. Trainings on other proven methods are allocated on the user's calendar and will be allocated for a suggested time.

Challenges we ran into

There were a lot of challenges throughout the development stage. To begin with, we faced several issues with getting the AI to transcribe what we are verbally saying to it to give us a response. Additionally, getting our calendar to automatically assign time slots for the user in a schedule was quite difficult since that was dependent on the information the user provides on the first page. Small errors also took long to debug and fix.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What makes us proud is that fact that we could develop this application, despite all the difficulties and not all group members fully understanding the framework. Despite that challenge, we put our best efforts to learn as much as we can as a group, work collaboratively and get our application up and running. We are proud to have a fully functioning and working application.

What we learned

We learned that sometimes, solutions can be easier than we thought - they might seem uncomprehensible, but if we take the time to read, debug and understand how everything works under the hood, we can achieve great things and have a product that works.

What's next for 4.0 Me

Our group would like to add more flexibility for all types of subjects in school (math, science, art, etc.). Another feature we would like to add is to use a web scraper to grab the course content from online (legally and with permission from the user) to make a plan to study for the user instead of the user having to provide context.
