Inspiration

In many DC communities, especially among students and immigrant families, access to verified local resources is fragmented, confusing, and often not multilingual. We were inspired to build a solution that increases transparency and bridges the gap between need and service using ethical AI. Our goal was to make opportunity easier to find, understand, and access.

What it does

202 Connect is an AI-powered platform that connects underserved communities to verified local resources across the DC area. Users can ask questions in natural language and receive clear, multilingual, and trustworthy guidance tailored to their needs. The platform prioritizes transparency, accessibility, and community-centered design.

How we built it

We built 202 Connect using a modern web stack integrated with an AI language model to process natural language queries. We structured verified resource data and implemented prompt engineering to ensure accurate, transparent, and responsible responses. The platform was designed with accessibility and simplicity at the forefront.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was ensuring the AI provided accurate, non-misleading information while avoiding hallucinations. We also had to balance simplicity with functionality, making sure the platform remained user-friendly while still delivering meaningful results. Structuring and validating resource data efficiently under time constraints was another key hurdle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a functional, mission-driven AI tool that prioritizes ethical design and community impact. We are especially proud of integrating multilingual accessibility, focusing on underserved populations, and maintaining transparency in how information is generated and delivered.

What we learned

We learned how critical data structure and prompt design are when building AI-powered tools. We also gained experience in collaborative development, rapid prototyping, and balancing technical feasibility with real-world community needs. Most importantly, we learned that responsible AI design requires intentionality at every stage.

What's next for 202 Connect

Next, we plan to expand our verified resource database, strengthen multilingual support, and implement stronger validation mechanisms to improve accuracy. We also aim to partner with local organizations to ensure the platform remains community-informed, sustainable, and scalable.
