Mythological Significance & History

The main idol of Goddess Chandi Devi was installed in the 8th century by the great Hindu philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya. However, the temple structure as seen today was constructed in 1929 by the King of Kashmir, Suchat Singh. The temple is closely associated with mythology, especially the legend of Goddess Chandi slaying the demon kings Shumbha and Nishumbha.

Significance of the Temple

The temple is considered a Siddh Peetha, where wishes are believed to be fulfilled.
It is believed that Goddess Chandi rested at this spot after killing the demons, and hence, the hill is considered highly sacred.

    • A popular and scenic cable car ride starting from near Gauri Shankar Temple.
    • Best suited for elderly or those who wish to avoid the trek.
