My teeny fandom of about 4 people: Daredevil/Iron Fist
It's one of those days where I can't seem to concentrate on things, because my renewed love for this pairing is just eating my brain. So I'm'a share it with you in an effort to get on to what I need to finish, and possibly bring a few more true believers into the fold.
So, the story of Danny's true love for Matt begins during Ed Brubaker's run on Daredevil. (Steve/Bucky isn't the only gift he's given to slashers.)
Matt Murdock is in jail on Ryker's Island, very publicly accused of being Daredevil, and somebody's gotta cover for him, and that somebody ends up being Danny Rand (aka. Iron Fist) because he's one of the few people with the martial arts and acrobatic skills to pull that one off.
(As an aside, while Matt's at Ryker's, Frank Castle --The Punisher-- arranges to have himself arrested and sent there so that he can help protect Matt from the other inmates, several of which Matt has put there. [Yet another of Ed Brubaker's many gifts to slashers.])
When Matt gets out of Ryker's -- because hey, how can he be Daredevil, if Daredevil's been seen around town beating up bad guys -- he confronts the other Daredevil on the rooftops, discovers they're very evenly matched, and it's only when Danny busts out the Iron Fist stuff does he realize who's been posing as him.
(For reasons I won't bore you with, Matt never got the message about who was covering for him, and why it is they're both pretty paranoid at this point.)
They begin a renewed association which brings Danny out of retirement, and some of Matt's observations about Danny are downright endearing, like comments about things such as the scent of his laundry detergent, or, my favorite, the fact that he can smell that Danny had buckwheat soba for lunch and it's given him heartburn.
And, while Danny is brave, wise, kind, a true and loyal friend, and a kickass martial artist, in some ways, he's charmingly naive or a little behind the 8ball -- like the fact that he didn't know that Matt was actually blind; he just thought it was an act as part of Matt's cover.
When the events of Civil War break out Matt's cleaning up the mess of who "outed" him and tried to frame him and that trail takes him to europe, so he asks Danny if he can cover for him again.
And then there's This ...

Okay, wow. The identity porn in all of that on top of the latent eroticism in several of those panels.
Danny-devil spends all of Civil War posing as Daredevil and he's captured and sent to the Negative Zone. (And he's got a great line in which he calls Tony Stark "Judas" and offers him a silver dollar so that he can now have 31 pieces of silver.)
Think about all of that: Danny gave up his identity as Iron Fist to take on Matt's "brand". Danny basically went to the Guantanamo bay of the Marvel Universe to keep Matt's secret.
You don't do that just because. You just don't. That's something written into the bones or carved into the heart.

So, why Danny/Matt and not, say Danny/Luke Cage or Danny/Misty Knight, both of whom Danny has long running relationships with, and Misty's his ex.
1) I really really buy Luke/Jessica. Their story is one of my all time favorite comics romances.
2) I don't know why but Misty/Danny has never clicked for me. (I mean, I like the idea of their relationship and hats off to Marvel for having a canonical inter-racial relationship for over 30 years.)
What I like about Danny/Matt is the way they both contrast and compliment each other, and this makes for so many possibilities. On top of the whole same height and build thing ....
1) They're both master martial artists.
2) They're both very acrobatic. (Oh yes, they're both bendy.)
3) They were both raised in religious traditions steeped in meditation and mysticism.
4) Matt is the "man without fear" and Danny's becoming Iron Fist was, above all, a test of courage.
5) Matt's very hard-edged, Danny's less ... brittle and a little more light hearted. (He didn't have a hard childhood in Hell's Kitchen. Not that his childhood was easy, but it had a stability, continuity, and order that Matt's did not.)
6) Identity Porn. Danny can be Daredevil, but Matt can never be Iron Fist.
7) Matt has super-heightened hearing, touch, taste, smell. And Danny can focus his Chi to mind meld. (He can also heal with his Chi and of course the Iron Fist thing.) That has a lot of interesting possibilities.
There's a small collection of Matt/Danny at AO3. (3 are by me.)

When Mutant Growth Hormone starts showing up on the streets, Daredevil and Iron Fist team up to stop it at the source. Danny's thrilled to be out in costume with a partner again now that Luke is focusing on being a good family man… even if Matt isn't the best at playing well with others. Of course, Danny didn't expect to hook up with Matt, but then again he has a history of ill-conceived hook-ups.
