Ride the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail

Bike or hike through the natural & cultural history of Wilmington on this paved trail. Part of a larger network connecting northern Delaware, this trail features scenic overlooks, educational waysides and unique perspectives on the industrial history of the city.

Delaware’s Only Natural Rock Climbing Wall

Get a new perspective high above the park by rock climbing Delaware’s famous blue granite cliffs! Attend one of our top-rope climbing programs or obtain a permit to explore independently (experienced top-rope climbers only).

Explore Folk Art at the Blue Ball Barn

Home to the Delaware Folk Art Collection, the Blue Ball Barn explores the rich cultural and agricultural history of the area, in our LEED-certified dairy barn built in 1914.

All kids, all abilities! Delaware’s Can-Do Playground is the first “boundless playground” offers unique gross motor and sensory exploration for kids of all ages.

About The Park

Natural resources like mature woodlands and the Brandywine River meet a rich industrial and cultural history at Alapocas Run State Park. Unique features include North America’s largest native fruit-bearing tree, the Paw-Paw; the Blue Ball Barn, a historic dairy barn which houses the Delaware Folk Art Collection; the Can-Do Playground, designed to be accessible to every child; Delaware’s only publicly accessible rock climbing wall; and the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail, a National Recreation Trail.

Park History

The land that became Alapocas Run State Park was donated to the city of Wilmington in the early 1900s by local industrialist William Bancroft. It eventually came to include the Blue Ball Barn, built in 1914 by Bancroft’s neighbor, Alfred I. DuPont, who named the barn after an inn and meeting house that was once located near the property. Alapocas Run became a state park in 2002.
Blue Ball Barn

This extraordinary barn, progressive in its environmental design, is the home of the Delaware Folk Art Collection. Visit the permanent and rotating art exhibits, or tour our displays highlighting the history of the barn and surrounding landscape. Renovations have created a multifunctional conference, special event and gallery space featuring meeting rooms, a large banquet room and a secluded courtyard.
