Turn a Flat Image Into Layers With Canva’s Magic Layers

Designerly Staff |

Have you ever had a client ask you to recreate an old ad they used? You may want to replicate it with your own vision, but doing so took endless hours. Or, perhaps your client sent you an old design, wanting some minor changes, but without the original editable files? Before, fixing something minor would have taken hours. But with Canva’s Magic Layers feature, you can easily separate elements, including text, for easier adjustments or to utilize something as a template.

Here’s How to Use Canva’s Magic Layers

You will need Canva Pro to use Canva’s Magic Layers. That said, if you’re a small business owner or designer, the minor $ 12.99-per-month fee will more than pay for itself with the flexibility the platform provides. If you aren’t using Canva already, you should be. The new feature only works with images at this time.

Step 1: Open Magic Layers

When you login to your Canva dashboard, you’ll see “Canva Layers” as one of the first options at the top of your center panel. As of March 2026, the tool’s icon appears near the top with a “New” label, so it’s very easy to find. The location will likely change as new features get introduced and people become more familiar with Canva Layers.

Step 2: Upload an Image

Your next step is to upload an image. You likely have something in mind you’d love to be able to easily edit. For this tutorial, Designerly chose an older ad in the public domain and then uploaded it to show you how it works. Please do be aware of copyright laws and unlawfully using the work of others. It’s one thing to take something a client commissioned and gives you to work on and quite another to copy the work of others. If you’re uncertain, it’s best to consult with an attorney specializing in intellectual rights.

Step 3: Let the Magic Happen

Once you’ve uploaded your image inside the tool, Canva gets to work. You’ll see a line wave across the image as it identifies different elements and begins separating them into layers. Instead of painstakingly rebuilding designs piece by piece‚ you can now break them apart and rebuild them faster than ever․ Here is the before and after of the public domain ad we used.

Note how the tool has separated different sections and they are now layers. Here is another view under Position/Layers:

You can click on each of those text sections and change them. Look at this change with the word “Colgate’s.”

With the new layers, you can change the font, change the words or change the color of the words. The sky and your imagination is the limit. You still have access to all of Canva’s features, such as background remover, image elements and other magic tools. You can apply styles, expand an image and so much more. Canva has outdone themselves with this tool and how intuitive and simple it is to use.

Step 4: View Image at Larger Scale

Once you finish your edits, remember to increase the scale and look all around the design for any stray parts you may have missed. You can also do this in the position view by clicking on an element and then choosing Position/Layers. You’ll be able to click on each individual layer and ensure it meets your new design’s standards.

Step 5: Download the Image

Your final step is to download your new image in whatever format you’d like. All the typical ones you’d use when designing in Canva are available, from PDF to JPG to PNG. Here is a silly finished ad our staff came up with to show you how you make a few of the many changes you can utilize with this tool.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

While Magic Layers is impressive‚ it is not perfect․ Particularly complex images or overlapping designs may not separate properly․ In some cases‚ text will be converted to shapes instead of being editable text fields and need to be adjusted․

Image quality is also a consideration‚ as lower quality images will make separation more difficult‚ and higher quality images will generally produce better results․

However‚ not every element will fit perfectly‚ so some may require slight adjustments or edge touch-ups to achieve a more polished final product․

Pro Tips for Better Results

The best results with Magic Layers can be obtained by using clean and high-contrast images. Images with clearly defined elements are also more likely to separate․ If you’ve created multiple layers‚ go back to the Position panel and rename them for better organization‚ especially as edits become more detailed․

You can also duplicate and edit the layer‚ so you can keep a copy of the original layer in case the edit doesn’t work․ Magic Layers can be combined with other features in Canva‚ such as Background Remover or Magic Expand‚ to apply additional effects without leaving the platform․

When Magic Layers Work Best

Magic Layers is especially useful when editing a file without a layer structure would take an inordinate amount of time․ For example‚ a client may provide a flat social media graphic but not the original files․ Magic Layers can separate the text and pictures․ It can be also used to refresh old ads allowing designers to update fonts‚ colors or layout without rebuilding․

It’s an especially strong use case for making templates‚ which you can then repurpose across campaigns just by changing the text and moving around the graphics that Canva made․ It’s a benefit for small business owners who want a consistent branding presence across platforms but don’t have time to design each asset from scratch․
