A parenthetical departure

Tiny pixel bears (Bearblog Creation Festival)

For the Bearblog Creation Festival, I drew tiny pixel bears1 inspired by the blog themes and art of fellow Bearbloggers. Can you guess who inspired each of these?

P.S. Some bears look better in dark mode. You can toggle a dark theme with the menu in the upper right.

From Bearblog neighbors (and beyond)

I invite others to make these tiny bears too! Here's a template if you're interested. :) You can import the template into Piskel, add your colors + details, and export it as a .gif. (Let me know if you create one! I'd love to include it here.)

FAQ

Can I put my bear on my website?

Yes! (Let me know if you do. I'm curious to see your bear in its natural habitat.)

But my bear is blurry. How do I add it?

Browsers like to smooth out images, so we have to tell them to keep things pixelated.

My recommendation: save your bear .gif from this page, upload it to your Bearblog, and add it to your page with the HTML + CSS below. If you'd like your bear smaller, change 144px to 96px or 48px. (For best results, resize to multiples of 48.)

<img
  src="https://path-to-bear.gif"
  alt="Pixel bear"
  style="width: 144px; image-rendering: pixelated;" />

What program did you use to create the bears?

I just ran a search for a pixel art editor online and picked one that didn't look like it would load all kinds of awful things into my browser. I ended up using Piskel.

Credits

A big thanks to Bearblog neighbors who drew and contributed tiny bears (attribution and inspiration under each bear)!

  1. The pixel bears are 48×48 but enlarged to 144×144 here. I think they're more fun to look at big.
