Welcome
Welcome to the website of the Cornell Tree-Ring Laboratory, home of:
- The Laboratory for Aegean and Near Eastern Dendrochronology
- The New York State and NE North American Dendrochronology Project
Teaching and Research
- Each year we teach an Introduction to Dendrochronology course for Cornell graduate and undergraduate students.
- Graduate research in Dendrochronology at Cornell
Samples
- Most of our work focuses on tree-ring samples we collect as part of our on-going research and teaching projects (from archaeological, historic or forest sites). However, if you have tree-ring (wood) samples from historic or archaeological contexts, we are interested to consider these and especially if they are from our local region (NE North America) or from the East Mediterranean. Please get in touch and we can assess and discuss (noting that not all wood samples are suitable for dendrochronology). Sometimes we can include these samples within existing projects. Sometimes we can do a small project on them. Sometimes we can look to seek funding to start a new project. However, please note that the Cornell Tree Ring Laboratory is self-supporting, and needs to fund its activities, and so we are not able to undertake substantial pro bono work. If you have requests to, e.g., try to date a house or other structure, etc., we usually have to request funding to cover our costs. Please note that we do NOT work on samples with unclear ownership or provenance. If you have samples that you would like us to examine, please see our ‘we need your samples’ page which includes sampling guidelines and instructions on how to send us your samples – do contact us first (by email please).
