"I've played this note three times, and you still haven't hit it."
a/n: might continue this verse in the future... i'm quite fond of the idea. un-beta'd

Baekhyun watches as Kyungsoo’s fingers slide over the piano, one note after another ringing clear in the still air of the practice room. Baekhyun wonders if he can really play, and suddenly he longs to hear something classical, something old and timeless spill from Kyungsoo’s hands.

“Baekhyun,” Kyungsoo’s voice is sharp when it cuts into his thoughts. He looks up from the piano and sees Kyungsoo’s usually smiling mouth flattened into a thin line.

“I’ve played this note three times,” Kyungsoo mutters and bangs it out again just for effect, “And you still haven’t hit it.”

Baekhyun’s cheeks heat up just slightly. He wants to say something about how he hasn’t slept more than four hours for the past two weeks for this comeback, how he hasn’t been able to wash his hair for the past two days because of his dye job, how his brother’s wife just had a baby a week ago and he doesn’t know when he’ll be able to see his little nephew. He wants to say all of this but Baekhyun knows it’ll fall on deaf ears. Kyungsoo knows all the hardships, has probably heard about them from countless other idols hundreds of times. It’s the price you pay. It’s the sacrifice you make.

Kyungsoo lets his hands fall into his lap, face softening a bit when Baekhyun sighs.

“Can you really play?” Baekhyun asks before he can stop himself. Kyungsoo’s eyebrows lift questioningly and Baekhyun isn’t sure his eyes can even get any larger. Baekhyun manages to gesture wordlessly at the piano. He hears a low chuckle and Kyungsoo’s pale hands are back against the key.

Something stirs in Baekhyun’s chest, rises up to his throat. He doesn’t recognize the song but he begins to hum despite himself, and maybe it’s his imagination, but he thinks he sees the corners of Kyungsoo’s mouth begin to lift.

Either Kyungsoo’s reached the end or he just feels like it’s time to get back to the task at hand, because the music stops to be replaced with an oppressive silence.

“Baekhyun,” Kyungsoo whispers, hand resting on his thigh, warm where the heat of his skin seeps through the fabric. Fingers curl around the curve of Baekhyun’s knee when he doesn’t respond.

“Let’s keep practicing, yeah?” Kyungsoo’s voice is softer now, gentle, and when Baekhyun finally meets his eyes he exhales a ragged breath he didn’t know he had been holding.

“Are you ready?” Kyungsoo asks, one hand hovering over the keys, the other still clutching at Baekhun’s knee.

Baekhyun nods and the note rings clear. He opens his mouth and ---

Not my first MCR fic, but first time posting a story on LJ. *bites nails* Critique is welcome and encouraged. My beta couldn't do this for me, so if you see any mistakes, let me know.
I'M ALSO LOOKING FOR MORE BETAS. Kthxbai.

"I have to do this, Frank."

"I know."

The pall-like silence settled between them again as clothes were shoved haphazardly into a small duffel bag, before the were zipped shut.

"Where're you going?"

"Dunno."

"Will you be back...?"

"Dunno."

Footsteps maneuvered to the door of their cramped apartment, before pausing. Green eyes filled with pain met hazel. Frank noted they didn't shine like they used to.

It wasn't the first time this had happened, but damn was Frank terrified it would be the last. He kept reminding himself Gerard was an artist. He always told Frank he wanted to be a free spirit with nothing holding him down. (It was better for the creative soul.) Frank stood by his decision. It's what you should do if you truly loved someone. But what would love cost him?

Half a lifetime of solitude? Rotting away on the lumpy crap they called a sofa? Would he give away all his dignity?

"Here..." Frank whispered, taking a scarf from the coat rack, wrapping it around Gerard's neck tightly. Gerard stared down at the scarf, which was red and black. In all truth, it was a Harry Potter scarf Frank's mother had got him for Christmas.

"Thanks," Gerard whispered in reply, taking a step closer to Frank. Frank could feel Gerard's break on his face; a mix of alcohol and cigarettes. Getting the feeling Gerard wanted to kiss him, Frank took a step back.

"You're welcome. There's snow outside, and I don't want you to be cold. And ... just in case there's even more snow ... wherever it is your headed..."

"Thanks."

Frank gave a nod and took another step backwards, sliding the chain off of their (his?) door. Gerard stepped out into the hallway of the apartment complez, opening his mouth to utter something. Perhaps it was goodbye, perhaps an apology, but Frank never heard it. He closed the door in his face, locking it before slipping back into the bedroom they had once shared.

Pushing the curtains from the window, Frank settled down next to it, leaning his cheek against the cold glass. His breath caused a thin layer of fog to form, clouding the vision he had of Gerard standing at the bus stop. Frank didn't wipe it away, preferring to see the blurred Gerard. It was how he would appear in his memories. Frank wasn't sure if he'd be returning, but he knew he wouldn't be here waiting.

As the bus stopped and picked up Gerard, driving away in a cloud of smoke, Frank traced a small heart in the fog, watching it disappear with another blow of his breath.
